Best Wayback Machine alternatives. How to find deleted websites.

Published: 2020-01-13

The Wayback Machine is the famous and biggest archive of websites in the world. It has more than 400 billion pages on their servers. Is there any archiving services like Archive.org? Yes, there are some alternative services, but all of them are just a thin shadow of archive.org. The main difference between the Internet Archive and all alternatives is the size. Archive.org is many times bigger than all of them.

Archive.is - This service works very similar to The Wayback Machine. Archive.is (or archive.today) is a non-profit organization whose data center is located in France. The service positions itself as a time capsule that stores the contents of the World Wide Web. Archive.is can save not only static web pages with short URLs, but also pages generated by Web 2.0 projects, which include, for example, Google maps. In comparison with Archive.org this webservice doesn’t crawl deeper, usually just the front page. They don't publish the exact size of cached websites, but it seems that their database size is only several percent of the Wayback Machine database.

GoogleCache - It has many billions of pages, but it holds them not for a long time. Expired domains often have their cache uncleared for months. But if a website was deleted many years ago Google cache cannot help you. Cachedview.com , Cachedview.nl - Cache browsers.

There are about 25 small and local archive.org clones and they have very limited databases. This website - timetravel.mementoweb.org  is Time Travel search engine for Web archives. It can also help you to find some deleted content. Time Travel searching cached pages in archive.org, archive.is and in some weird places like Icelandic Web Archive or Web Archive Singapore. You can find the list of existing archiving services on their website - http://timetravel.mementoweb.org/about/

Recently our system has been updated and now we have two new options:
- You can download Darknet .onion sites. Just enter .onion website address in the "Domain" field here and our system will download it from the Tor network just like a regular website.
- Content extractor. Archivarix can not only download existing sites or restore them from the Web Archive but can also extract content from them. In the "Advanced options" field you need to select "Extract structured content". After that you will receive a complete archive of the entire site, and an archive of articles in xml, csv, wxr and json formats. When creating an archive of articles our parser takes into account only meaningful content excluding duplicate articles, elements of design, menus, ads and other unwanted elements.
